Here you’ll find some of our previous events, including our commemorations of the 40th anniversary of the closure of Consett Iron Company/British Steel Consett.

Consett’s Christmas Countdown!

We thought we’d end the year with a bit of seasonal cheer with our History Of Consett Steelworks Advent Calendar!
Each day throughout December, the ‘doors’ below will reveal an image and story relating to Consett and the steelworks, mostly at Christmas, many based on the company magazines that have been kindly uploaded onto Facebook by committee member Allen Reilly. Each day in December you will be able to click on the tiles below and reveal that day’s image, counting down to Christmas Day.
If you have a seasonal story to tell we’d love to hear it – you can email Richard or Victoria here.

The Closure of Consett Steelworks
Wednesday 9 December, 18.00 – 19.15

It is 40 years since Consett steelworks closed in September 1980. As part of our commemorations, Peter Brabban, photographer and chronicler of the closure, will present an illustrated talk via Zoom.
The recording will be posted in due course.
Book Launch of The Stanhope and Tyne Railroad Company with author Rob Langham

Join the History of Consett Steelworks Group to hear Rob Langham talk about his new history of the Stanhope and Tyne Railroad Company to coincide with the release of his new book on 15 November.
Rob will take us through his research and give us insights into this vital link that secured the supply of the raw materials to produce Consett steel throughout its 140 year history. It will detail the technology, the enterprise, the people and the place and transport us back to a time when geographical location was no barrier to progress and industrial development. There will be time for questions at the end.
Join us for this interactive session to discover more about this incredible feat of industrial enterprise.
Rob’s book may be purchased from Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stanhope-Tyne…/dp/1445697661
