Welcome to History of Consett Steelworks, a resource for the memory of a community, a place and an industry.
Our aim is to gather the stories and the memories of the people who lived and worked in Consett during the time of the steelworks, as well as connect everyone with the towns industrial past. We are adding new content all the time, and the gallery area is under constant construction. We hope to have plenty of content from the community to share. The images below are representative of the content we have in our gallery pages. Take a look by clicking the Gallery tab to the left.
Here we also have the back catalogue of our events programme. This includes the daily digests from our 2020 Forged Over 140 Years programme, a series of online events to commemorate 140 years of iron and steel production at first the Derwent, then Consett Iron Company and finally British Steel, planned to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the closure of the site in September 1980.
It also includes the 2020 Advent calendar, full of information on the people of Consett and their daily lives, mainly taken from the CIC magazines that were produced from the late 1950s to the late 1960s.
Finally, it includes our programme for International Women’s Day 2021, including recorded sessions on women steelworkers, the advocacy work of the Women’s Banner Group, the Kent women’s suffrage movement, the lives of the women of Berwick as recorded in the archives and the use of original material to produce best selling women’s fiction.
